ASTRID LEMBKE is a Professor at Freie Universität Berlin, specializing in Old German and Yiddish literature. Her research focuses on literary theory, courtly romances, medieval and early modern Ashkenazic literature, and medieval hagiography. Her major publications include monographs on St George in Medieval German and Latin legends (Erzählte Heiligkeit. St. Georg in mittelalterlicher Dichtung, Berlin 2008) and on questions of identity and community in pre-modern Jewish stories about relationships between mortal men and demonic women (Dämonische Allianzen. Jüdische Mahrtenehenerzählungen der europäischen Vormodern, Tübingen 2013). At present, she is working on a research project dealing with fictional inscriptions and meta-textual techniques in 13th century German romances. It is a study on medieval reflections on literary theory. This lecture is based on her project. It is sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
