The title page of a medical work published in Lyons in 1522 reads: ‘The New Practice of medicine... compiled from the traditions of the Greeks, the Latins, the Arabs, the Phoenicians, and recent authors in five golden books.’ Who were these Phoenicians (Puni) from Carthago in North Africa, and what did they contribute to Western Medieval and Renaissance medicine?
