Lecture: “The Hand of Ralph of Coggeshall: Chronicle-Making in the Reign of King John”
James Willoughby (University of Oxford)
Room 400, Muzzo Family Alumni Hall, 121 St Joseph Street
The chronicle made at Coggeshall abbey in south-east England during the time of Abbot Ralph is a valuable, sometimes unique, contemporary source for the reigns of Kings Richard I and John. This lecture will discuss how palaeographical insights can illuminate the process of the chronicle's composition and reception, with ramifications for posterity's view of King John.
