The 50th Annual Erasmus Lecture: “Facebook Avant la Lettre: Communicating Renaissance Style”
Kathy Eden (Columbia University)
The Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies is pleased to present the Fiftieth Annual Erasmus Lecture.
The human face plays a leading role in the communication revolution of the early modern period. This lecture will explore this role as Erasmus inherits it from antiquity, reinvigorates it, and sets its course for such innovative communicators as Michel de Montaigne.
Kathy Eden is Chavkin Family Professor of English and Professor of Classics at Columbia University. She has written a number of books on the legacy of ancient rhetoric and philosophy in Renaissance humanism, most recently The Renaissance Rediscovery of Intimacy (Chicago, 2012). In addition to winning several teaching awards, she has been a Guggenheim fellow, a visiting fellow at All Souls, Oxford, and a visiting professor at Princeton University. Between 2008 and 2012 she was editor of the Erasmus of Rotterdam Society Yearbook.
