The Passover story of the exodus from Egypt has inspired artistic responses for nearly two millennia. From images on ancient synagogue walls to illustrated books used at the Seder to contemporary matzo boxes, visual representations of Passover often contain hidden messages among their straightforward narratives. This talk explores some of the beautiful works of art produced by or for Jews in the
Mediterranean area during the Middle Ages in connection with this central event in Jewish history, religion, and imagination.
