This past summer the Institute’s Manuscript Studies Programme re-convened at the American Academy in Rome, hosting sixteen students drawn from nine different countries. Programme director M. Michèle Mulchahey taught Latin Palaeography, while guest instructor Jeffrey Hamburger, Kuno Francke Professor at Harvard University, offered a Special Subject on text and image in medieval manuscripts. Rome provided unrivalled opportunities for the students to work with manuscripts firsthand in the city’s libraries; the summer was capped by a trip to Montecassino, where some of the great monastery’s treasures were made available to the class.
