Domenico Benoci
Domenico Benoci earned his Ph.D. in Christian Archaeology at the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology, with a thesis in Early Christian Epigraphy titled Le iscrizioni cristiane dell’Area I della catacomba di Callisto. Aggiornamenti e nuove acquisizioni, supervised by Prof. Danilo Mazzoleni and Prof. Vincenzo Fiocchi Nicolai. He is Adjunct Professor of Early Christian Archaeology at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome.
Since 2023, he has served as Scientific Director of the Vivarium Project, a research program investigating the settlement, religious, and territorial history of the ancient diocese of Scolacium, where Cassiodorus founded the Vivarium monastery. He is President of the Istituto di Studi su Cassiodoro e sul Medioevo in Calabria and directs the journal Cassiodorus and the series Bibliotheca Vivariensis.
His publications address Christian epigraphy, the archaeology of the Roman catacombs, Cassiodorus, and the late antique diocese of Scolacium in peer-reviewed journals such as the Rivista di Archeologia Cristiana, Epigraphica, and Litterae Caelestes.
At PIMS, he is developing the project Scriptura et Structura: Cassiodorus and the Transmission of Cultural Memory in the Medieval West. The project examines the relationship between Cassiodorus’ Institutiones, the spatial organization of the Vivarium, archaeological evidence, and the medieval reception of Cassiodorus’ educational program.
