William Schipper

William Schipper is Professor of English at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His research interests encompass Old English, Carolingian Studies, Hrabanus Maurus Biblical commentaries, and the Glossa Ordinaria. He co-edited The Maritime World of the Anglo-Saxons, Essays in Anglo-Saxon Studies 5, Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies 455 (Temple, AZ, 2014). His article “‘Unpublished’ Biblical Commentaries by Hrabanus Maurus” has appeared in Journal of Medieval Latin 27 (2017): 223–301.  As a Visiting Scholar, Professor Schipper will develop an article contending that an unpublished commentary on Acts surviving in three manuscripts, long thought to have been written by Hrabanus Maurus, was written by another author. He also plans to complete an edition of the Tractatus Rabani supra Actus apostolorum and a diplomatic online edition of Hereford Cathedral, MS O.V.8 (an early copy of the Gloss on Acts, both to be published in the series Corpus Christianorum. Together these two documents will demonstrate the significance of the Tractatus as one of the major sources for the Gloss on Acts. He is also editing the Anderson Pontifical (BL, Add MS 57337) for the Henry Bradshaw Society, with the assistance of several English specialists on liturgical history.
