A Medieval Christmas: This is a Marvellous Hearing!
Poculi Ludique Societas
Get your medieval Christmas on this year with Toronto's renowned medieval and renaissance theatre company! Poculi Ludique Societas (PLS) is once again partnering with St Thomas’s Anglican Church to celebrate A Medieval Christmas: This is a Marvellous Hearing! Continuing the exploration of the life of the Virgin Mary begun with The Mary Play, this year’s performance includes episodes from the N-Town manuscript about events leading up to the Nativity. Come celebrate the birth of Christ, but also reflect on the skeptical yet real-life attitudes that the average person might feel when encountered with the outlandish notion of a virgin birth.
Joseph is flabbergasted to return from a far country to discover that the town and clergyman are in an uproar: it appears that his new wife (and erstwhile virgin) Mary is pregnant and insists that she will be giving birth to the son of God. Naturally, he (and everyone else!) is more than suspicious about this claim, but Mary is unwavering in her belief. If this isn’t enough to contend with, Joseph is called on to return to Bethlehem, his childhood home, and he determines that Mary will accompany him, even though she is due to deliver any day now...
A Medieval Christmas is directed by Kimberley Radmacher, and also features musical performance by medieval troubadours, Pneuma Ensemble, who specialize in using the traditional instruments of the time.
