Mary J. Carruthers is Remarque Professor Emeritus of English at New York University. She has written widely on medieval literature and rhetoric, memory and mnemonic techniques, and the history of spirituality. She is the author of The Book of Memory (1990; second ed. 2008), The Craft of Thought: Rhetoric, Meditation, and the Making of Images, 400–1200 (1998), The Medieval Craft of Memory: An Anthology of Texts and Pictures (with Jan M. Ziolkowski, 2002), and The Experience of Beauty in the Middle Ages (2013), along with numerous essays, articles, and edited collections.
