Presentation: “Sacred Images from Ethiopia: Intercultural Workshops and the Cooperation of Artists from Ethiopia, the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean”
Carolin Schäfer (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich)
Sponsored by the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto
The presentation focuses on the world’s second largest collection of Ethiopian icons, consisting of 93 objects, and analyses the icon in its historical and cultural context with influences originating from Ethiopia’s surrounding regions. Ranging from the earliest recognizable local production in the 15th century up to modern pieces, the presentation provides a representative explanation for each period’s development and new influences, originating from e.g. Coptic, Armenian, Byzantine, Italian, Jain and Mughal cultures.
