Brian Merrilees (1938–2013) - in memoriam
Professor Brian Merrilees, the consulting editor for Medieval French Literature for the Department of Publications since 2008, died on 6 September 2013.
Professor Brian Merrilees, the consulting editor for Medieval French Literature for the Department of Publications since 2008, died on 6 September 2013. An active contributor to the Institute community since his arrival at the University of Toronto in 1964, he worked diligently for Publications, soliciting new manuscripts from both established and younger scholars, reading and analysing the manuscripts when they arrived, acting as an reader for completed texts, and above all lending luster to our editorial programme. A meticulous editor and thoughtful critic, he was a major figure in the study of Old French and of Anglo-Norman in particular. The contents of the recent issue of Florilegium dedicated to him indicate his profound influence on the field. He was as well an enthusiastic teacher and generous supporter of his students, more than one of whom is now associated with the Institute.
